Mirror's Edge DLC Trailer and Screenshots: Far Out

Dec 04, 2008 10:56am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, DLC, Screenshots, Trailer
Earlier this morning, Mirror's Edge senior producer Owen O'Brien noted that the upcoming downlodable content would feature a "a more abstract aesthetic."

Now, publisher EA has provided some media. Abstract? Well, that's one way to put it.

Promising "no guns, no cops, and no city," the seven downloadable Time Trial maps will hit PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in late January, priced at 800 Microsoft Points ($10). In addition, PlayStation 3 owners will receive an extra downloadable map for free.

Already out on consoles, the first-person free-running game is due on PC January 13.

Mirror's Edge PC Release January 13; Time Trial DLC Late January

Dec 04, 2008 8:18am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, DLC
Following up on an earlier promise for more information at a later date, DICE today announced that the first DLC for Mirror's Edge will be a time trial map pack.

The seven maps will be available for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 for $10 or 800 Microsoft Points. The PlayStation 3 version will also receive an additional map for free.

"The freedom of movement and control in first person has been the most popular aspect of Mirror's Edge so we decided to distil these down to their purest form for this map pack," said DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien, adding, "We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game."

The DLC will ship late January.

DICE also announced that the PC version of the game will ship to North American stores January 13, with the international release following January 16.

Mirror's Edge DLC, PC Version Coming Early Next Year

Nov 11, 2008 11:37am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, DLC
In celebration of the pending Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release of DICE's Mirror's Edge, EA has promised downloadable content for the first-person parkour action game and a January release for the PC port, which was delayed back in September.

"To keep the action coming after launch, DICE is currently developing downloadable content that will be available at the beginning of the year. More details to be announced shortly," reads a press release from the publisher.

The release may be short on details, but Sony has previously flaunted exclusive DLC for the PlayStation 3 version of the game. However, that exclusivity could apply to a specific level or release, not DLC in general, leaving the PC and 360 versions open to DLC.

Meanwhile, a specific date has not been set for the delayed PC version. Rather, only a release window of January is known at this time.

Update: Downloadable content for Mirror's Edge will be released in both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 form, EA DICE confirmed with GameCyte.

EA CEO Put the Mirrors in Mirror's Edge, Likes Risks

Oct 16, 2008 2:20pm CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello was responsible for the plentiful reflective surfaces in DICE's Mirror's Edge because he "pushed the bejesus" for the game to be third-person, according to a recent interview.

As part of a Gamasutra interview series, Riccitiello revealad he was "a little freaked out" over making a first-person game that wasn't a shooter. Instead, Mirror's Edge is a first-person game inspired by parkour running.

"I was really wrong about the third-person thing," he admitted in the wake of rising hype for the game. But he got what he wanted in the concession of adding mirrors. "I got mirrors so you can see [Faith, the game's protagonist]," he said.

The CEO touted parts of the publisher's holiday portfolio as signs... Read more

EA Planning Mirror's Edge Trilogy

Oct 14, 2008 9:39am CST tags: Mirrors Edge
As EA DICE's first person free-runner Mirror's Edge sprints towards its November 11 release on PS3 and Xbox 360 and the winter-due PC edition, senior producer Owen O'Brien has revealed that the title is actually the first installment in a planned trilogy.

"The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," O'Brien informed AusGamers. "For these first couple games, it's all about Faith. It's all about her experience in the world."

But that doesn't mean the series will stop after the third entry. "I think there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story," he explained. "I think the world we've created, the city and the culture and the environment, is almost as interesting or more interesting than any one individual story."

A level editor may be among the features of Mirror's Edge 2, as O'Brien noted that it would be "something we're probably going to look out for the sequel."

"The thing is, the game is so easy to play and intuitive, that creating a level editor is a skill in itself," he reasoned. "If we do it, we want to make the editor as easy to use and intuitive as the game is."

While the console releases hit November 11, the PC edition of Mirror's Edge is currently slated to arrive in the vague "winter" timeframe as DICE wanted to ensure that the PC version would be "amazing."

New Mirror's Edge Screenshots and Interview: Producer Nick Channon Talks Time Trial, PC Delay

Oct 07, 2008 11:00am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Screenshots, Interview, Preview
The Time Trial mode in Mirror's Edge (PC, 360, PS3) is self-explanatory. It takes some 20 sections of the single-player game that are ideal for racing, breaks them down into several additional checkpoints, and scores you on your time.

A red-hued ghost mode can be turned on, providing some direct competition as you race through the level. It's the addition of this ghost that really allows the mode to shine.

Mirror's Edge, the first-person rooftop runner by DICE.
At one point, rather than simply climbing up a stairway, my ghost opponent vaulted up an I-beam and wall-jumped its way past me. I spent the next few minutes attempting to master the ghost's move, and having a lot of fun at failing miserably. Users will be able to share ghosts, as well as download the ghosts of the top online leaders.

After getting some hands-on time with the mode, I had a chance to sit down with Mirror's Edge producer Nick Channon. We talked about Time Trial, that interesting proof of concept video, and the reason behind the delay of the PC version. ... Read more

Mirror's Edge Aims to Sell 3 Million

Sep 24, 2008 7:00pm CST tags: Mirrors Edge
Martin Frain, the marketing director for DICE, thinks the studio's upcoming Mirror's Edge will break three million copies sold.

"I would look for world-wide sales of over 3 million, on three platforms, as a conservative number," Frain told Edge. He added, "I think it has the potential to do a lot more than that."

Frain based his prediction on the significant hype the game is garnering along with its unique image. "You look at a screenshot of Mirror's Edge, and you know what it is," he remarked.

However, Frain concedes that predictions can't be so concrete when entering a new genre of gameplay. Mirror's Edge is the first known parkour-inspired, first-person platforming action game. In Frain's words, "It's not like we can model it on shooter games--it's not a shooter game."

Mirror's Edge will start its fiesta of sales on November 11 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a PC release following later.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of EA DICE's first-person action adventure game Mirror's Edge will ship November 11, publisher Electronic Arts announced today.
"We wanted to create an entirely new experience, with a different type of heroine and a world that not only looks fresh and new but has unique gameplay," senior producer Owen O'Brien said of the company's parkour-influenced game.

EA also announced that a demo will be released through the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store before the game ships. It will feature a tutorial and an early segment of the single-player story mode. Additionally, people who pre-order the game starting September 26 will receive a code that unlocks a Time Trial mode in the demo.

As mentioned here previously and reiterated by EA in today's announcement, the PC version of the game ships later this winter.
