Okay, as door-unlocking minigames go, the one in Obsidian's upcoming RPG Alpha Protocol isn't exactly shocking. However, as a door-picking minigame connoisseur, a master of unlocking, this developer diary represents a fascinating glimpse of future criminal recreation.

Sega just sent over a dozen new screenshots from Alpha Protocol, the espionage-centered action-RPG in development at Obsidian Entertainment. Alpha Protocol is currently scheduled to hit PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in February 2009.

At a press event earlier this week, publisher Sega clarified the release plans for its stylish tactical RPG Valkyria Chronicles and Obsidian's spy-centric RPG Alpha Protocol.

Previously penciled for a vague fall arrival, Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) is now slated to debut in North America this November.

Meanwhile, Alpha Protocol (PC, PS3, 360) is projected for a February 2009 release, firming up that "early 2009" estimate.

Sega has released the first Alpha Protocol screenshots, showing off the recently announced spy action RPG from Neverwinter Nights 2 developer Obsidian Entertainment. Alpha Protocol is currently scheduled for an early 2009 release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Confirming earlier reports, publisher Sega today officially announced Alpha Protocol. Handled by Neverwinter Nights 2 and Knights of the Old Republic 2 developer Obsidian Entertainment, the espionage-centric action-RPG will arrive on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in 2009.

Described as a "talented young agent cast out by his government," main character Michael Thorton has been cut off "from the very people he is sworn to protect." Game Informer magazine had previously described Thorton as an up-and-coming badass in the vein of James Bond, Jack Bauer, and Jason Bourne.

With the game set in the modern day, players are said to have multiple options in the way they complete missions in the third-person title, such as a guns blazing approach versus all-out stealth.

"Alpha Protocol embraces everything we enjoy about making RPGs from a fresh perspective," said Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart.

Neverwinter Nights 2 and Knights of the Old Republic 2 developer Obsidian has revealed the first details on Alpha Protocol, the studio's upcoming spy-oriented action role playing game.

Due out on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next spring, the game follows Michael Thorton, a super spy in the making. According to the latest issue of print magazine Game Informer, which broke the news, Thorton's adventures are in the vein of such renowned badasses as James Bond, Jack Bauer, and Jason Bourne.

Similar to BioWare's Mass Effect (PC, X360), the game sports real-time third-person combat. A number of selectable skills allow gamers to focus more on their chosen play style, be it action-heavy or stealthy.

Unlike most RPGs, the characters that populate an area will only engage in a specific conversation once, dictating caution when choosing dialog options and tone of voice. Much like any good spy, Thorton will run across, and be able to woo, countless women during his globe-traveling exploits.

More information and details on Alpha Protocol, which will be published by Sega, are expected shortly. Sega and Obsidian are also working together on an RPG set in the Aliens universe.
